One of Africa's most iconic destinations, the Victoria Falls is found where the Zambezi River plunges 100m over basalt cliffs into the Zambezi gorge below. It is aptly named in local tongue as "The Smoke That Thunders" due to the amount of spray generated, resembling smoke from afar. The immediate area surrounding the Falls is effectively a rainforest, due to the amount of water spraying over the edge. Victoria Falls straddles the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and both sides have buzzing local towns: Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia. This is Africa's adventure capital, where one can go white water rafting, bungee jumping or take helicopter flights over the Falls. For those not looking for the extreme, there is more than enough to keep you busy, from leisurely sunset cruises on the upper Zambezi to overnight canoe and guided game drive safaris. Exceptional Victoria Falls lodges offer a variety of accommodation options near the Falls.
