The Seychelles are a group of islands located in the Indian Ocean, 1500 kilometers off the eastern coast of Africa. They are made up of a group of 115 islands, most of which are not inhabited and which are protected as nature reserves. Around 50% of the landmass of the islands is designated as national parks and reserves. Tourism and conservation legislation are stringent, making the Seychelles one of the world’s leaders in sustainability. The islands are home to some of the world’s most rare species, many of which are endemic. The famous Coco-de-mer tree, which produces the largest seed in the world, is found here, as well as the Jellyfish tree, of which there are only 8 surviving individuals. The Seychelles is also home to the only flightless bird of the Indian Ocean, the Aldabra white-throated rail. Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites are found on the islands, including the Aldabra coral reefs, where the Aldabra Giant Tortoise, one of the world’s largest, can be found.
