Selous Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in Africa and a hidden gem for tourists. Excellent game-viewing and notable birding can be expected when visiting the park. Great populations of elephant, lion and African wild dog exist in the park, with some of the highest densities of these species occurring here. The Rufiji River runs through the park and is the focal area in which most safari operators are based. Huge pods of hippo and massive crocodile populations can be found all along the rivers pools and on its banks. This vast remote wilderness that teems with game offers a truly intimate nature experience and is a refreshing contrast to the busier northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Masai Mara). Due to its remote location and the difficulties of getting there by road, most visitors opt to fly in from Dar es Salaam on a charter plane, which is recommended.

Why we like it

Africa's largest park; True wilderness tracts; Fantastic safari opportunities; Proximity to Dar Es Salaam
