Pongola Game Reserve was the first proclaimed reserve in Africa, having been established over a century ago. The picturesque reserve in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa is home to a variety of mammal species, including spotted hyena, white rhino, buffalo and elephant. Leopard and black rhino are rarely seen. Healthy numbers of zebra, warthog, giraffe and a variety of other antelope species are supported in this acacia-veld biome. Guests have the added opportunity of seeing healthy hippo and crocodile populations in the lake. Water bird-life is prolific, and there are healthy tiger fish populations. Lake Jozini itself is a huge 15000-hectare body of water, while the southern reaches of the Lebombo Mountains form a stunning backdrop to the lake. Although the lake is relatively quiet in terms of boat traffic, it can become very busy over Easter, the Christmas period and over annual fishing competitions. If you are looking for peace and solitude make sure to visit over quieter periods.
