Murchison Falls National Park is the largest park in Uganda, and its oldest conservation area. It gets its name from the crashing falls as the River Nile rushes through a narrow gorge, plunging 43 meters. The river bisects the park, creating a haven for a plethora of wildlife species that are attracted to its banks. The park is home to 4 of the Big 5: lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant, with rhino being bred in a sanctuary nearby. It is a haven for bird-lovers, with over 450 species recorded. The Victoria Nile teems with hippo and crocodiles. Several lodges and camps are found in the park, providing accommodation for guests. Visitors can explore the park on game drives, cruises up the Nile, and game walks. Visit the famous Falls and go chimpanzee trekking in the forests. There is also a variety of adventure activities to be enjoyed on the river. Notable visitors to the park over the years include Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway and several British royals.
