Mikumi National Park lies along the northern frontier of the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. This easily-accessible national park is only around a 4-5 hour drive from Dar Es Salaam. It is conveniently located in the heart of Tanzania's southern circuit on the border of Selous, within a few hour's drive of Ruaha. A wide variety of ecosystems exist in Mikumi, from the open Mkata floodplain to the miombo woodland. Visitors can expect to see Africa's larger antelope species, including greater kudu, sable antelope, and eland. With over 400 bird species so far recorded, Mikumi is a birding hotspot. General game-viewing is great, with large herds of buffalo and healthy elephant populations present. If you are looking to get away from the crowds of the northern safari circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, etc.), then Mikumi is perfect for you.

Why we like it

Birding hotspot; Large herds of elephant and buffalo; Less congested than Northern Circuit; Easily accessible
