Madagascar is an island country located in the Indian Ocean. It is 587,041 square kilometers in size, and is renowned as one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. There are approximately 200,000 species that are known to be found in Madagascar, with around 150,000 of those being endemic- that is, found nowhere else on earth. Some ecologists refer to Madagascar as the "eighth continent", due to its abundance of unique species. It is particularly famous for its lemur species- unique to the island, of which more than 60 species exist. The carnivorous fossa, a cat-like mammal, is another fascinating creature found only in Madagascar. Half of the world’s chameleon species are found in Madagascar, and also 6% of its frogs, 99% of which are endemic to the island. The flora of Madagascar is equally distinctive and plentiful. Six species of the characteristic baobab tree, which is synonymous with Africa, are found in Madagascar. The famous Avenue of the Baobabs is a must-see.
