Liwonde National Park is located in Malawi, on the banks of the river Shire, near Lake Malombe. It is one of Malawi’s premier safari destinations, and one of its most popular parks. It is rich wildlife diversity, as it is made up of a host of habitat and ecosystem types. These include mopane woodland, riverine forest, savannah plains, swamps and grasslands. The park is also home to over 400 species of birds, including the spur-winged lapwing, African fish eagle and palm-nut vulture. Elephants are found in abundance in the park, and the river houses large populations of hippos and crocodiles. Predators are less prolific, but lion and leopard are found in the park and are fairly frequently seen. Guests are able to experience the thrill of walking safaris in addition to traditional game drive safaris. Boating and canoe safaris also take place on the river, a unique experience. Both luxury and more affordable safari lodges are found in the park.
