Limpopo National Park is the newly formed Mozambique extension of the Kruger National Park. A simple road network through the park exists, linking the Giriyondo border post in the east to the mighty Masingir Dam in the south. The area is dominated by splendid tracts of Mopane veld, broken apart by the odd ancient Baobab tree. Although general game numbers are not as high and as relaxed as the South African side of Kruger, there are viable populations of larger game in the park, including the famed Big Five. Birding in the park is rewarding. There are a variety of walking, canoe and 4x4 trails in the park. In addition, there are some rustic self-catering camps in the park and a small luxury private camp. There are still several villages within the park's boundaries which one will drive through on the main access roads. Herds boys attending to their family flocks wave cheerily as you drive past, which adds a taste of true rural Africa.
