Hwange became a national park nearly 100 years ago and as such hosts some of Africa’s finest pristine wilderness. This is where large herds of elephant, zebra and buffalo roam. Great birding can be expected and predator activity is frequent and top grade. There are healthy populations of the big cats and spotted hyena. The park also is home to significant sable and roan antelope populations. The terrain is charachterized by Mopane thickets, rocky ridges and year-round water holes (intended to keep game within the park's boundaries during the dry months). There is a collection of superb luxury lodges on private concessions as well as self-catering and camping accommodation in the official park camps catering for both the more budget-minded traveler and self-drive wilderness safari enthusiasts. The road network is good providing for a fantastic self-drive safari. There is a very basic road network and bumpy jeep tracks are the order of the day.
