The recently formed Dinokeng Game reserve is an 18 500 hectare conservancy consisting of a number of farms, game farms and small holdings in Gauteng – an easy hour’s drive of Pretoria and Johannesburg. Great general plains game viewing can be experienced but the Big 5 currently only occur in a certain sector of the park so it’s best to find whether the lodge you are staying in is located in this sector or not. There are a variety of accommodation options in Dinokeng from very affordable self-catering camps to fully catered luxury lodges. Whilst out on the reserve one will encounter a few fence lines here and there. Building structures are noticeable as a result of the shift from traditional farming to eco-tourism in the area. The park is continually expanding and developing reclaimed farmland and will no doubt become a popular tourist destination due to its affordability and proximity to Gauteng.
