Benguerra Island is found off the coast of Mozambique, and forms a part of the spectacular Bazaruto Archipelago. At 55 square kilometres, it is the second largest island of the archipelago, and is also a national park. It is made up of a combination of wetlands, freshwater lakes, forests and savannah habitats, which are home to a remarkable diversity of terrestrial and marine life. There are around 140 bird species found on the island, and freshwater crocodiles can be found in the island’s lakes. Benguerra's flagship specie is the fascinating dugong, a an endangered marine mammal that is related to the manatee. There is also a smaller island near Benguerra known as Pansy Island, which is home to a small, captivating sea urchin, known as pansy shell or sand dollar. There are a host of activities on offer to guests, including scuba diving, fishing, horseback riding, or simply relaxing and enjoying the beauty of the pristine white beaches.
