The Bangweulu Wetlands and Swamps are found in northern Zambia. The ecosystem spans a large area and is rich in biodiversity. It is made up of the Bangweulu Swamps, lakes and wetlands, and associated grassy floodplains and woodlands. The Wetlands have three main attractions. Firstly, it is near here that legendary Scottish explorer David Livingstone died in 1873. Secondly, the endangered Shoebill, a gigantic, bizarre-looking bird that attracts bird-lovers from around the globe, is found here. Thirdly, the region's Chimbwe floodplain is the focal point of an astonishingly large gathering of 75000 endemic black lechwe. These beautiful antelope gather here in their tens of thousands and are part of one of Africa’s most impressive wildlife congregations.
The wetlands are also home to a host of other wildlife species, including buffalo, hippo, oribi, tsessebe, elephant, and crocodile. Birdlife in the region is also superb, and includes flamingos, pelicans, and spoonbills.
