Addo Elephant National Park is located in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, about an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth in South Africa. The 164000-hectare park combines seven of South Africa’s major vegetation zones, including five of the world’s seven biomes. There are few places in the world which can offer the same variety of vegetation, geology and wildlife. Addo is marketed as a "Big 7" park, as it includes the Big 5, as well as the Great White Shark and the Southern Right Whale in its coastal zone. The park is effectively split up in to a number of separate sections, each offering something special. Addo’s main game-viewing section consists of 30 000 hectares that are separate from other fragments of the park. Elephants are the flagship specie, with viewing of these grey giants being arguably the best on the African continent. Private lodges on concessions and self-catering camps provide plentiful accommodation options.

Why we like it

Unparalleled diversity of biomes; "Big 7" (Big 5 + Great White Shark and Southern Right Whale); Superb elephant-viewing
