Greystoke Mahale is a magical luxury safari camp perched on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains National Park. The adventure starts before guests even reach the camp- after transferring to Mahale, a large wooden dhow is used to carry guests over to the camp. The camp’s main area is made up of a thatch-roofed main lodge with open sides, which lets in cool lake breezes and provides luxuriant views. This is where the dining area, small library, and small games room is located. There is also an elevated bar, which again provides wonderful views. The accommodation at the camp consists of six beach “bandas”, each nestled into the vegetation. They face the lake and are double-storeyed. They feature large beds draped in mosquito nets, small decks with sun-loungers, dressing areas, and en-suite bathrooms. The top storey of the banda is accessed using a charming staircase that has been carved out of an old canoe. It features a day bed, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views. The furniture in all the rooms is also carved out of old wooden boats, creating a delightfully rustic atmosphere. The key activity offered at Greystoke is chimpanzee trekking, led by guides who are highly knowledgeable and know the animals by name. There are many other wildlife species, as well as superb birdlife. Other activities include boat cruises and kayaking.
