Governors’ Camp, Masai Mara
Created in 1972, Governors’ Camp set new standards in luxury for a tented camp and today it’s still considered one of Africa’s best. Governors Camp was erected on a a prime spot of land in the heart of Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, which, almost a century ago, was first exclusively reserved for Kenya’s colonial Governors. The luxury tented camp nestles in a forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, its waters teeming with bird-life, hippo and crocodiles. Some of the tents line the riverbank and enjoy uninterrupted views over the Mara River; others have views across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. All tents have en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, and flushing toilets. There is a bar tent with a deck overlooking the Mara River, and a dining tent with views over the plains. Home to the BBC’s Big Cat Diary series, the camp enjoys an unrivaled location with plenty of big cats and the annual wildebeest migration arriving on its doorstep every year.
