The Kalahari is the largest sand basin in the world. Although classified as a desert it is well vegetated in many parts and this arid landscape supports a plethora of wildlife. From the fiery red rolling sand dunes in Namibia, the lively dry river beds in the south to the huge endless flat salt pans in the north the terrain has several distinct zones. Numerous endemic creatures occur here and it is in these drier areas that many a well-travelled safari goer will visit to experience true wilderness or see something new. The Kalahari is synonymous with predators from big cats and hyenas to raptors and snakes. The night skies are never ending and the climate is harsh – in summer it gets unbearably hot and in winter the evening temperature can drop well below zero. The Kalahari is one of Africa’s unique jewels and is a great travel option for the well-travelled safari goer.
