The Okavango Delta and the Chobe River system are the life blood of Botswana’s dry north. The Okavango is one of the world’s premier wildlife destinations and a biomass hotspot where the Kavango River literally flows in to a sea of Kalahari sand forming a green oasis of life. This thickly vegetated paradise supports huge concentrations of mega fauna including high concentrations of the big 5 (rhino not as common as the others), exceptional wild dog, cheetah, hyena, hippo, giraffe and zebra amongst others. The way to see the Delta is from the water on a Mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe). There are a number of full board lodges and camps which are on the more expensive side however one can organize camping safaris in to the Delta as a self-drive safari or a guided tour which caters for the more budget weary traveler. The Chobe River System provides fantastic boat based game viewing and fishing. One can expect to see huge herds of elephants which congregate on the shores at dusk.
