The Eastern Cape Frontier
The malaria-free Eastern Cape is home to a number of private reserves and the Addo Elephant National Park. The area contains tracts of savannah grassland, semi-desert Karoo, coastal forests, dune belts and thickly vegetated valleys. The Eastern Cape is a particularly popular safari add-on for holiday makers visiting the Garden Route or travelling up the coastline from Cape Town. The reserves and parks are generally smaller in size than found elsewhere in the country and are not true wilderness areas but do offer a great range of accommodation and activities to suit all budgets. All the general plains game as well as the infamous Big 5 occur in healthy numbers on the various reserves. With a close proximity to the Indian Ocean visitors have on offer a diverse range of places to visit.
