The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park straddles portions of both South Africa and Botswana. It is a vast area of Kalahari Wilderness that caters primarily for self-drive safaris with camping and self-catering facilities. There are a handful of exclusive wilderness camps dotted throughout the park, providing the solitude many safari-goers long for. The Kalahari is synonymous with exceptional predator activity, and the Kgalagadi will not disappoint. Birding is excellent, with raptors being particularly prevalent in the region. Most of the desert-hardened wildlife is concentrated along the 2 main dry river beds of the Nossob and Mata Rivers. Between these two river beds lie swathes of red sand dunes of the true Kalahari Desert. The Kalahari landscape is a great change from the usual savanna-based safaris of Southern and Eastern Africa.

Why we like it
