Kariega Game Reserve

Kariega Game Reserve is located on the doorsteps of Kenton-on-Sea in South Africa's Eastern Cape, and is a great safari add-on to those travelling to the Eastern Cape or the Garden Route. Although one does not feel like they are in a remote African wilderness area, this delightful property supports large numbers of very relaxed general game, excellent bird life and thickly vegetated hills and valleys dominated by cactus-like Euphorbia trees. There is a considerable amount of activities on offer, including canoeing in the river, mountain biking and hiking independently in a smaller section of the reserve (here there is only general plains game with no elephants or lions). The main game viewing section of Kariega plays host to the Big 5. Lions, elephants and white rhino are sighted on most days, and there is a small population of buffalo on the property. Leopards are shy and typically seldom seen, but Kariega is currently supporting a leopard research project on the reserve.
